A home management binder is a great tool, if you actually use it. For many women it can easily become another unfinished project and clutter burden. My home management binder is one of my favorite tools for keeping my family organized. I reference it at least once a week. I’ve been using it for years and it is really handy. If you have wanted to make your own home management binder, but you have found it has become another organizing burden keep reading. The hardest part of using the binder once you put it together is getting into the habit of using it and not forgetting about it. If you want to keep your home management binder from becoming another unfinished project, follow these simple rules.
1. Keep it Handy
A home management binder should be a reference tool that can help you quickly access important information. The key word here is quickly. If do you not keep your home management binder in an easily accessible spot you will fail at using it. I keep ours in my kitchen in a cabinet. Another good spot would be in the home office or a drawer in the kitchen or home office. I prefer to keep mine in the kitchen because that is where we process paper and it is the center of activity in our home.
2. Keep it Simple
The next rule of being successful with your home management binder is to keep it really simple. Remember this is a reference book, not a novel. So limit the information that you put inside of it. It should consist of papers that are important and need to be accessed quickly.
3. Keep It Up to Date
The last rule of the home management binder is to keep it up to date. The one type of paper I have the most of in my binder are work and school schedules. If the schedules are not current, they are worthless. It is also important to update your emergency contacts regularly. Remember this binder is not just for you, but also for your spouse, your kids and could even be used by your babysitter. If you are in charge of the binder, it is your job to keep it up to date and accurate or it is just another piece of clutter in your home.
